1. How much time do you spend online each day?

More than I ought, I’m sure.

2. What is your browser homepage set to?

SteveJamieson.com of course!

3. Do you use any instant messaging programs? If so, which one(s)?

AIM, or rather, iChat AV

4. Where was your first webpage located?

I posted my very first personal homepage on the free web space offered by F&M during my first year of college. It was pretty small, at first. At the time, I was more focused on the website for the zine that I helped start in high school, which was the prior occupant of my F&M space before being moved to Geocities.

5. How long have you had your current website?

Well, in some sense, this site is a distant descendant of that first homepage, which became known as “The Steve Zone” and grew to include a picture gallery on the homepage. On February 12, 2001, “The Steve Zone 2001″ was born following the addition of the proto-blog, known as the “Captain’s Log”, and some other minor changes. I registered my domain name, SteveJamieson.com, on April 9, 2002, however that didn’t become the name of the site until I launched my redesigned, MovableType powered, professionally hosted website on August 27, 2002. So, depending on which milestone one uses, this website could be anywhere from just under one year-old to over five years-old. Take your pick.

Hey, it’s been a while since I’ve posted an entry here. I’m really sorry about that. However, until I get around to writing down all the meaningful thoughts in my head, you’ll have to settle for an old Friday Five.

1. What brand of toothpaste do you use?

Colgate Total

2. What brand of toilet paper do you prefer?

Kleenex Cottonelle (with Ripples)

3. What brand(s) of shoes do you wear?

New Balance 608

4. What brand of soda do you drink?

I drink lots of sodas.

5. What brand of gum do you chew?

I never could get into chewing gum. After the gum loses its flavor within the first ten seconds, I derive no additional pleasure from chewing it. Therefore, I don’t even bother trying anymore.

1. Do you like talking on the phone? Why or why not?

No! In fact, I hate the phone. It’s evil evil evil!

When it rings, it demands to be answered immediately, so you either have to drop everything to attend to it, or ignore it and hope that it’s not important. Also, when calling someone there are a variety of annoyances. If you don’t know them that well, then you have to hope they will recognize your name. If no one is home, then you have about 3 seconds to decide whether or not you want to leave a message on the answering machine and to figure out what you want to say. If someone else in the house answers the phone, then you have to request the person you want, which is especially interesting when kids are involved, or you know the person who answered but don’t want to talk to them at the moment. In addition, I despise having to take messages for others. Finally, telemarketers… ’nuff said.

Face-to-face, email, and IM are all preferable forms of communication for me. Mainly because they are more individual and controllable. You can only talk to me in person, or IM me at times when I choose to make myself available. Similarly, I can read email at my leisure. When you email or IM me, you contact an account used only by me, so you know that you won’t have to go through a third party, and I can immediately know who it is that is contacting me. I look forward to the day when we can all use voice IM so that we have a communication medium similar to the telephone but with individual accounts, and the ability to control our accessibility. Cell phones actually come close to this standard in that they can be turned off when one doesn’t want to be bothered, and in that many people have their own, individual cell phone number, which allows one to contact them directly, and through caller id, know who is calling.

1. As a child, who was your favorite superhero/heroine? Why?

I think I’ve always liked Batman. He’s not some space alien, or the result of some accident involving something radioactive, nor does he mess around with the space-time continuum on a regular basis. He’s just a normal guy with really cool gadgets. He’s the superhero that you can relate to.

2. What was one thing you always wanted as a child but never got?

Any of Batman’s gadgets :oD

3. What’s the furthest from home you’ve been?

Geneva, Switzerland, or thereabouts, back when I went on my high school’s field trip to France.

4. What’s one thing you’ve always wanted to learn but haven’t yet?

I don’t think there’s anything that I’ve always wanted to learn. Most of the things that I want to learn today are the answers to more recently developed questions and concerns.

5. What are your plans for the weekend?

Write a 7-10 page paper, teach my communicants class about the cultural mandate, and further carry out my evil plan for world domination.
