The Steve Zone 2001 rocked. It was my best web design effort at the time I created it and for some time after. However it was getting a little old. The content that I wanted to add was stretching the design a bit too much. The maintenance of the Captain’s Log was getting rather tedious since for every new entry I wrote I had to manually archive it and update the archive listing. My site needed some automation to make things easier. Plus, it’s no longer 2001.

And so I set out to make a whole new website.

I needed automation and so that meant that I needed CGI, PHP, & MySQL. Free web space from Apple wasn’t going to cut the mustard anymore. I needed a full-featured web host.

While I searched for an adequate host, I started development of the new site on my PowerMac G3 Tower running Mac OS X. I played with various free scripts which I found at the CGI Resource Index and the PHP Resource Index. Initially I settled on the web app Greymatter. Everything seemed dandy but then I ran into some bugs. I found bug fixes, and made some bug fixes of my own (pretty impressive since I’ve never done anything with perl before). However, I finally ran into a bug I could not handle, and so I had to trash Greymatter and salvage the design work I had done. That’s when I came across MovableType. MovableType just simply worked, and worked well. A quick editing of my design templates and I was back in business.

In the meantime, I signed up for a hosting account from Bounceweb. However when I had some trouble getting things set up and their tech support turned out to be a little less than supportive, I decided it would be a good idea to change hosts. After reading some very good reviews of the company, I turned to the runner up in my web host search, ICDSoft, whose only downside was that they only offered yearly billing. Bounceweb offered monthly billing, so if the service stunk, I was only out $5. But I threw caution to the wind and signed up for service from ICDSoft.

So now then… After a month or so of development and one web host change later, SteveJamieson.com is finally here for your enjoyment. Now that updating my log (or blog as one would call it in net-speak) is easier, the postings should come more frequently, and you can always entertain yourself by voting in the poll. Check back often because more content is on the way.

I love the site. I love the poll! Will there be other polls? aw heck, I like the whole site… much better than my pitiful attempt at HTML (that hasn’t been updated since I graduated and they won’t let me on the college webspace anymore (moo). Anyhow. I’ll be watching
